Have you ever been in a car without air conditioning? It is a nightmare, especially in the summer months. The cab of a car turns into a moving greenhouse, with the sun beating down through the windows and turning every available surface into a mini stove-top.
Imagine working in that environment.
That is the situation for many of the 74,000 delivery drivers working for UPS. Actually, you don’t even have to be a UPS driver to experience these extremely hot conditions, since UPS doesn’t bother to air-condition many of their warehouses.
The conditions have been so intense that OSHA recently penalized the company with the maximum fine of $13,260 for unsafely exposing workers to “excessive heat”.
We are glad to see that OSHA is taking this safety violation seriously, but would like to take this opportunity to remind workers that they should not put up with extreme or dangerous conditions from their employer. Everyone deserves a safe and healthy working environment. If you suspect that your working environment is not ideal, then please call us to discuss the details of your situation. We are happy to advise you on what is a normal job hazard, and what is an actionable offense.
More than 100 UPS employees have been hospitalized with heat-related conditions since 2015. If something like that is happening around you or to you, do not hesitate to call. We are here to help support the workers in the world to find and secure safe gainful employment.
